Distressing reports have emerged in the past few weeks of racism, discrimination and violence faced by Black and other non-white international students fleeing Ukraine, who were among the millions of people seeking refuge in neighbouring European countries.

They were forcibly prevented from boarding trains and buses as priority was given to white Ukrainians. When they finally reached neighbouring European borders, they were met with racist verbal and physical attacks. Latest reports have revealed that some African refugees are being detained in EU immigration facilities.

Whist we acknowledge the phenomenal outpouring of support for Ukraine since the Russian invasion began, many Black students have described a very different and traumatic experience. This is deeply concerning and we need to come together to consider what support can be provided to Black students facing the trauma of war and racism.

The aim of this event:

  • Discuss the current situation for Black students in Ukraine and neighbouring European countries.

  • Consider what trauma and mental health support can be provided.

  • Create a space for professionals and organisations to make connections.
