Lunch in the Square – honouring the legacy of the Windrush Generation 

Sunday 23 June, 12–7pm

The Friends of Windrush Square (FoWS) in partnership with Lambeth Council will be holding the 2nd annual Big Caribbean Lunch on Sunday 23 June in Windrush Square, Brixton. The organisers plan to give lunch for 100 members of the elder Windrush Generation and their descendants, encouraging them to come together on the Square for a few hours of friendship, Caribbean food, music, fun and storytelling. The event will run from 12-7pm. 

The lunch will also host renowned speakers including Patrick Vernon, Windrush Campaigner, and an array of community leaders and guests. In addition, there will be support on hand for members of Windrush Generation and their descendants trying to access the Government’s Windrush Compensation Scheme and those in need of citizenship support. 

Ros Griffiths, Chair of FoWS said: “We owe them a debt of gratitude that can never be repaid – we also will be celebrating their achievements as well as acknowledging the struggles that they have faced.”

About Friends of Windrush Square: 

The Friends of Windrush Square originated as a sub-committee of the NGO Brixton Society but has operated independently since 2021. We represent a diverse collection of local residents, activists and business representatives, including Black Cultural Archives, Empathy Museum, the Brixton Bugle, St Matthew’s Church, Cherry Groce Foundation and national organisations, including Repowering London. Our mission is to protect and promote the heritage, function, and architecture of Windrush Square (and its surroundings) by advocating for initiatives that generate social value.
