Leading Routes: Paths to University Success event

May 4th, 2017

On Saturday 08 April 2017, Leading Routes hosted the Paths to University Success event for parents and carers at Conway Hall in Central London. The one day event was supported by UCL, Ubele Initiative and the Conway Hall Ethical Society and aimed to enable parents, carers and young people from the African diaspora communities to gain insightful and practical information about higher education from a number of Russell Group universities.

The event welcomed over 150 attendees which is a great achievement for an inaugural event of this kind. Workshops offered a range of information from details about the university recruitment processes and student finance, to experiences of black university students and conversations about community leadership.

Paulette Williams, Founder of Leading Routes said: “We understand that students need a strong network to succeed in education and parents play a vital role. We hope the event facilitated conversations about university between parents and their children and gave them the opportunity to speak to representatives from some of the UK’s leading institutions.”

Feedback from the participants and partner organisations alike was overwhelmingly positive. The event's success proves emphatically that there is a huge unmet demand for higher education support services targeted at the African diaspora communities of the UK and Leading Routes has led in addressing these needs in an innovative way.
