The former Council plant nursery in Wood Green, now run by community organisations, inlcuding The Ubele Initiative, has just received a great promise from Sadiq Khan. City Hall has pledged £7500 towards our current fund-raising campaign.
Under the title ‘Wolves Lane, Wood Green’s Mini-Eden’, we are crowdfunding for solar power to reduce the energy bills for the historic palm house and the café. With £3520 already pledged from the public, the crowdfunding campaign is two thirds of the way towards its target of £16,146 by December 10th.
Yvonne Field, of The Ubele Initiative, said ‘We are really pleased with the Mayor’s pledge and support. Now we need another £5000 by December 10th to claim all the pledges and spend the money. To get this far is really encouraging. The growing number of visitors on Sunday afternoons shows how much local residents love this place. We’ve a family fun day on 4th November and a seasonal market on December 9th, where hundreds of people will be able to see the great potential here for events, meetings, parties, weddings and community activities’.
Rachel Dring, of Crop Drop, the Centre’s not-for-profit veg. box scheme, said ‘There is great potential here for school visits and a thriving new community centre. Apart from the palm house and café, most of the site is now growing organic vegetables for local use. Our growers here, London Grown and Edible London, involve volunteers so locals are learning to grow their own and the public are loving the quality of the food. The spectacular glasshouses are becoming a local visitor attraction.’
Deputy Mayor for Planning, Regeneration and Skills, Jules Pipe, said: ‘All Londoners should feel that they are part of the regeneration of their neighbourhoods and crowdfunding is a really effective way of giving people a stake in their part of the city. The Mayor’s Crowdfund London programme empowers Londoners to bring about positive change in their local area and I would encourage people to support these innovative projects.’
